The Coconut Tree

The Coconut Tree

The coconut tree is one of the most common and useful trees in Sri Lanka. It is known as the "Tree of Life" because every part of it can be used for a purpose. This tree grows very tall and does not have any branches. At the very top, it has a crown of large, green leaves. We get coconuts from this tree, which are essential for cooking our daily meals. Coconut milk is used to make curries tasty, while coconut oil is used for frying and for hair care. The water in the young coconut is a delicious and natural energy drink. We use the dried leaves of the tree to weave mats and to make ekel brooms for sweeping. The strong trunk of the tree provides high-quality timber to build houses and furniture. From the coconut husk, people make coir ropes, carpets, and brushes. Even the hard shell is used to create beautiful handicrafts and kitchen spoons. Because it provides food, shelter, and medicine, the coconut tree is a true blessing to us.
