A Symbol of Infinite Peace
The Buddhist flag is not just a piece of colored cloth; it is a profound symbol that carries the soul of millions of Buddhists worldwide. Born in the sacred land of Sri Lanka in 1885, this flag represents the Six-Colored Aura (Chabbannarangsi) that radiated from the Buddha’s body at the sublime moment of His Enlightenment.
Each stripe tells a story of devotion: the Blue flows like a calm ocean of loving-kindness, while the Yellow reminds us of the Middle Path, free from all extremes. The vibrant Red stands for the blessings of a disciplined life, and the pure White reflects the timeless purity of the Dhamma. The Orange glows with the light of deep wisdom, and finally, the Mixed Color weaves all these virtues together, showing that the Buddha’s truth is universal and for everyone.
When we see this flag fluttering gently in the breeze during Vesak or Poson, it fills our hearts with a sense of deep healing and pride. It is a silent messenger of non-violence and compassion, reminding the world that even in the darkest times, the light of the Dhamma can bring us together as one human family.
